The Skin Saint’s Guide to Treating Inflammation at Home

The Skin Saint’s Guide to Treating Inflammation at Home

Inflammation is an unwanted guest to the party, but nevertheless, it shows up. Inflammation has several causes, as well as several ways it can manifest on your skin. Since 2022 is a trending year for anti‑inflammatory skincare, I thought it would be a good time to share Skin Saint approved ways to treat it from home. You can also see my guide on in office anti‑inflammatory treatments, on my @facemedspa page. So settle in with a cup of tea and let’s get started!

Causes of Inflammation

First off, how do you know if you have skin inflammation? You might have redness, irritation, swelling, acne, rosacea, a rash or hives. Basically, nothing we want on our face! And it’s caused by so many different things so it’s important to nail down what’s causing your inflammation. Common causes include your diet (sugar, gluten and dairy are big culprits!), allergies, consumption of alcohol or caffeine, skincare (especially scrubs!), infections, viruses and the environment.

But don’t fear, your Skin Saint is here with some of the best skincare tips on how to keep inflammation at bay. Keep reading to find out what you should be keeping in your skincare routine to keep your skin calm, soothed and happy!

Antioxidants

Are you using antioxidants in your skincare? If not, you’re going to want to! They’re key to protecting your skin and are a great preventative measure. Antioxidants protect your tissues from damage and prevent unwanted inflammation from occurring. Even if you don’t suffer from inflammation, you should have some kind of antioxidant visible signs of inflammation yet, there is inflammation going on everyday from the aging process.

So, which should you be using?

  • Vitamin C
  • Niacinamide
  • Vitamin E
  • Retinol (Vitamin A)

Many of these amazing antioxidants will be found in the specific skincare products that will be mentioned throughout this guide, so keep an eye out for them!

Cleansers as a First Defense

Cleansers are the foundation of your skincare routine. If you’re suffering from inflammation, you’re going to want a gentle soothing cleanser without harsh ingredients to irritate your skin.

My CleariCalm Clarifying Cleanser is a mild wash that addresses inflammation and redness from rosacea, psoriasis, or eruptive breakouts. Purifying Lilac Extract regulates hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands (where the oil on your face comes from), while offering anti‑bacterial and anti‑inflammatory benefits.

I also recommend my Betazyme Resurfacing Cleanser and Lavender Luxury Cream Cleanser for gentle daily cleansers that soothe irritation and inflammation.

Desensitizing Products

My Defencell products were created specifically for inflamed skin. So if your skin needs to chill out, this will be your holy trinity! Even better, it’s perfectly formulated for those of you with sensitive skin!

Defencell Cleanser

Gently remove impurities from sensitized skin with this anti‑inflammatory cleanser, which helps to calm and cool irritation. This milk cleanser aids in defending against sensitivity caused by exposure to pollution, a harsh climate, and other environmental factors. It replenishes the skin’s natural barrier, reduces redness, accelerates healing, and aids in wound repair.

Defencell Tonic

Quench dehydration and calm irritation with this soothing tonic formulated to calm sensitivity and inflammation. Containing skin defending actives, this daily use tonic is great for those who need moisture without harsh chemicals. It balances the skin’s pH and removes mineral deposits that cause dryness, alleviates dermatitis, and improves the skin’s natural barrier function.

Defencell Cream

Delivers exceptional hydration and skin conditioning benefits to those who experience sensitivity, redness, and feelings of tightness. This peptide‑rich formula contains a wide range of natural source actives which focus on diminished barrier function, environmental aggression, and allergenic‑prone skin. You’ll find it soothes the skin, decreases redness, and relieves itchiness and tightness while maintaining your skin’s health.

Specialized Serums

I LOVE medical‑grade serums. I consider them to be an important part of every skincare routine because they’re packed with high concentrations of powerful active ingredients to really get in and make a difference deep in your skin! That’s probably why I have ten (yes, TEN) serums in The Skin Saint line. They’re so versatile and many of mine are multi‑functional, meaning you get more bang for your buck and can cover several skincare ingredients in one serum. With all these amazing active ingredients, serums are great for soothing and preventing inflammation.

Here are my top picks for anti‑inflammatory serums:

SOS Defense Serum

This desensitizing, anti‑inflammatory, anti‑redness serum is great for sensitive skin and rosacea. It prevents cells from being damaged by UV light and repairs the skin’s barrier function.

Amplify HA Serum

Calm redness and irritation while shielding the skin from environmental and digital pollution from cell phones and laptops. Delivers immediate long‑term hydration and improves elasticity.

Bioidentical Barrier Serum

Great for red, overly dry, or compromised skin as it corrects dull rough skin and reduces signs of aging. Provides antioxidant and moisturizing nutrients to brighten and help rejuvenate your skin’s texture.

Complete Your Skincare Routine

Round off your skincare routine with these anti‑inflammatory miracle workers!

Physical SPF

For inflammation, a physical SPF is the way to go as it’s less irritating and sits on top of the skin blocking sun, rather than absorbing into the skin and converting rays into heat. Try out my Pure Physical SPF 47, Pure Physical Tinted SPF 44, or Antioxidant Sport Defense SPF 50 to keep your skin safe and protected without irritation!

Rescue Recovery Cream

If your skin is irritated by AHAs and Retinoids, this cream will save the day! Specially formulated with cactus and yeast extracts and low molecular weight peptides, you’ll find relief from irritation, restored barrier function, hydration, and protection. It can even help reduce stinging from more irritating products!

IllumiBright Pads

Packed with botanical skin brightening agents, antioxidants, and skin soothers, these pads will calm inflamed skin. A cocktail of antioxidants and botanicals helps to reduce redness and irritation while protecting skin against extrinsic factors.
